California Miniature Sheepadoodle by the river at Rasmussen Ranch

What is a Sheepadoodle?

A Sheepadoodle is a breed of dog that has been carefully and selectively bred, to combine the best traits, of the Old English Sheepdog and the Poodle.  Depending on the sizes of the poodles used in a breeding program, Sheepadoodles can be Miniature, Medium or Standard. Miniature Sheepadoodles should be under 30 pounds, Mediums should be 30 - 50 pounds, and Standard Sized Sheepadoodles will be 50 pounds or over. Daddy Dogs Here...

Both the Old English Sheepdog and the Poodle are old European breeds that have a long history of being close companions and helpers to their human families. Mommy Dogs Here...

The Old English Sheepdog tends to have heavier bone with a calm demeanor and a tendency for aloofness towards strangers but at the same time having a genuine love towards and for the members of their human family.

The Poodle, when properly bred, has incredible intelligence with a strong desire to understand and communicate with their human family.

The Old English Sheepdog does not shed like other breeds.  They do have a double coat, but it does not "blow" out on a seasonal basis like a Golden Retriever or German Shepherd Dog, instead, old dead hairs will be released as an Old English Sheepdog is groomed.  Another characteristic of the sheepdog is that they typically are heterozygous for the furnishings gene, resulting in long hair on the face and muzzle.

The Poodle is famously a non-shedding dog but has hair that grows continuously, generally in tight curls.

Since the Sheepadoodle is a direct cross between these two incredible breeds, that characteristics that are exhibited are a beautiful blend of both.  The Sheepadoodle tends to have long wavy hair, that does not shed, but does require regular brushing or trimming.

The personality of the Sheepadoodle is highly dependent upon the knowledge and skill of the breeder.  Some poodles have been bred for colors and characteristics with little attention paid to temperament and personality.  At Rasmussen Ranch and Prince Poodles we are diligent in selecting from the best Poodle genetics and place an equal emphasis on Temperament, Health and Trainability, along with applying equal diligence in selecting the best Old English Sheepdog genetics.  The resulting Sheepadoodle pup will be an incredible and superior companion animal, equally at home on a ranch, suburbia, or in a down-town environment.

Sheepadoodles can be kept trimmed to live active lifestyles in rural areas where they excel with livestock and ranch life.  Sheepadoodles are especially proud when their hair is allowed to grow long, lustrous and is able to be displayed in its full glory.

Sheepadoodles will always turn heads and start conversations because of their unique appearance and incredible demeanor.  All pups must pass our Puppy School course before they are eligible for placement with a new family.
